Biography

My college teaching began at Adelphi University in 1970, where I taught mathematics and computer science for 28 years.  I joined the Dowling family in the fall of 1998.  My interests and activities reflect the changes that have occurred over the past 40 years or so . When I graduated from high school in 1957, the space age arrived suddenly with the launch of Sputnik.  Although I had already been a professional musician (accordion and piano) for several years, I decided to pursue degrees in Aeronautical Engineering from Parks College of Aeronautical Technology (B.S.) in 1960 and Georgia Tech (M.S.) in 1961.   I then spent 5 years doing research in the wind tunnels of NASA Ames Research Center before returning to academic studies, receiving a Ph.D. in Mathematics from RPI in 1970.

Since beginning my university teaching career, I have engaged in research into the propagation of light waves through turbulence while holding a NASA grant, and, in recent years, my interest has turned to object oriented programming languages and random processes, especially as they apply to the game of blackjack.  In short, my interests range from applied mathematics to computer science.  Currently, I am primarily involved with the development of courses in programming languages and in the use of technology in teaching mathematics and computer science.
